Zurich - Hong Kong

Flight Zurich - London was really nice !! Steph and I got seats directly behind the emergency exit, which meant: LOTS of room for the legs =).
Arriving at London Heathrow, we were both a little shocked. Zurich Airport was quiet, nice and clean, London (Terminal 3) was loud and crowded. After waiting for 2 hours we could finally move to the gate. And there was the next surprise: instead of an Airbus A340-300, our plane was a Jumbo. This meant that there were not two seats on the window side, but three. This left us with an extra free seat between us and again we had a little more legroom.
Nevertheless, the flight was exhausting and we could not sleep at all. The food was not that great either and we were happy to finally arrive in Hong Kong late in the afternoon. There things went pretty smoothly. We immediately found our bus that took us down town Hong Kong. There, we also had no problem finding our hostel. A cute little place hidden in a huge building. The pros: our own bathroom, free wifi, nice staff, clean room. The cons: hard mattress , no window.
After exploring Hong Kong a little bit and finally feeding ourselves, we came back to the hostel and were just completely exhausted.  Unfortunately, due to the jetlag, we were again right awake after only 3 hours of sleep. So we just tried to kill the time, waiting for morning to arrive.

This morning, we  took the star ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island. We pretty much just went through the list of Lonely Planet Highlights, i.e. the Peak, Wet Market, Bank of China Tower, the Escalators, Hong Kong Park ...

All of this leaves us with a first impression of Hong Kong and Asia. We have to admit, it is overwhelming, but we are slowly adapting. The contrasts are huge...nice bank buildings and expensive hotels next to really really run down places. Or the buildings are nice up to the second story (with Gucci and Burberry) and look very crappy further up. The weather here...it's ok. It's warm but also very very windy and very foggy. Like it says in Lonely Planet, clear days are rare.

Tomorrow we will move to a different hostel, close by, but not as expensive. Two more days in Hong Kong...will we grow to love this city?


P.S.: I have not been on any news or sport websites since we left...and I intend not to do so for the next four months :-D. Last sports I have from a TV in a London Heathrow pub: Arsenal leading 2-0 against West Ham.


Der Flug Zuerich-Londong was super! Steph und Ich sassen gerade hinter dem Notausgange, das heisst: VIEL Platz fuer die Beine =).
Der Flughafen in London hat uns dann etwas geschockt. Zuerich war noch so klein und sauber und ruhig, Londong aber war sehr sehr laut und wir fanden kaum irgendwo Platz. Zwei Stunden konnten wir endlich zum Gate. Da gabs schon die naechste Ueberraschung: Wir hatten ein groesseres Flugzeug. Da gab es zwischen dem Fenster und den Gang Sitz noch einen freien Platz, den wir gerne hingenommen haben. So hatten wir etwas mehr Raum fuer unsere Beine.
Trotzdem war der Flug sehr anstrengend. Geschlafen haben wir kaum. Das Essen war alles andere als gut. So waren wir froh als wir im spaeten Nachmittag in Hong Kong ankamen. Da lief alles wie geschmiert. Wir fanden unseren Bus der uns nach Downtown Hong Kong gefahren hat und auch unser Hostel fanden wir ohne  Probleme. Das Zimmer hier ist super. Wir haben unser eigenes Bad, koennen den Laptop benutzen und das Zimmer ist sehr sauber. Leider ist die Matraze etwas hart und ohne Fenster verliert man jegliches Gefuehl fuer die Zeit.
Nachdem wir am ersten Abend noch etwas in der Stadt herumgewandert sind, kamen wir todmuede ins Hostel zurueck. Leider konntent wir nur 3 Stunden schlafen und versuchten die restliche Zeit bis zum Morgen unsere Zeit totzuschlagen.


Heute morgen fuhren wir mit der Star Ferry von Kowloon nach Hong Kong Island. Da klapperten wir alle Sehenswuerdikeiten ab: the Peak, Wet Market, Bank of China Tower, the Escalators, Hong Kong Park ...


Erstes Fazit: Hong Kong ist eine ueberwaeltigende Stadt aber wir gewoehnen uns langsam daran. Die Kontraste sind vielfaeltig und stark. Neben riesigen Bankhaeusern und teuren Hotels gibt es verlotterte Gebauede, die zumindest von aussen sehr schaebig aussehen.


Das Weter ist ok...warm und feucht aber doch sehr windig und auch sehr neblig. So sieht man leider nicht viel von der imposanten Skyline.


Morgen gehts in ein zweites Hostel, das zwar weniger schoen aber dafuer wesentlich billiger ist. Noch zwei Tage in Hong Kong...Werden wir diese Stadt noch lieben lernen?
